Superlattice Power Incorporated, a groundbreaking company in the field of lithium-powered batteries, is investigating plans to develop batteries for space flight applications. The experimental investigation into space flight applications involves a unique process for large scale production of two cathode materials for their ion-lithium batteries. The company has expanded both their production capabilities and their anode research capabilities in order to accommodate the necessary quantities.

The current cathode materials being used by Superlattice are very durable, and have a gravimetric capacity of 240 mAh/g, but in order for successful use in space flight applications, that will need to be increased to at least 280 mAh/g. Superlattice Power hopes to accomplish this through the use of their two new cathode materials, Li(LixNiyMnz)O2 and Li(LixNiaMnbCoc)O2, both of which are mainly composed of manganese. Their manganese structure makes them both environmentally friendly and less expensive compared to other batteries commonly used.

Superlattice Power plans on securing a Doctorate candidate dedicated to leading the efforts to synthesize the composite anode. If success is reached on batteries capable of meeting the specifications and harsh conditions in space, then there are many other potential applications. Once the batteries can meet the demands of extremely hot and cold temperatures, there are many other potential applications that will open doors for the company. Extreme conditions that exist for military, medical, factory or underwater applications could all be dealt with through the use of these new cathode batteries.
